I seem to remember one of the highlights of the Winnipeg conventions was when the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League would hold practice at the far end of the field. Do you remember anything like that happening Gary or am I mixing memories?

I spent the weekend with some relatives. They have an fairly extensive library of JW material going back 50 years in their spare bedroom. I was looking at a few items when I found a program for the Divine Victory convention held in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1973. The convention lasted 5 days. The sessions began around 10 am and ended about 5:30 pm each day (not counting the music played beforehand). Nathan Knorr attended and gave 3 or 4 talks. Knorr gave the Sunday public talk and 25,434 people attended according to the hand written notes on the program. There were 577 people baptized at the assembly. I remember going to Winnipeg for conventions and they were big events held outdoors. I haven't been to a convention in years. I suspect conventions today don't have attendance numbers like this one from 1973.

Thanks for the replies. I had nothing to fall back on other than the "if it seems wrong it is" theory. For those who might be curious (and if you are you really need to get out more), since the original post I have gone out with all three women. It was a busy week. I thought two of the three were great. I didn't get a chance to find out much about the third one. She kept answering her cell phone while we were out (yet another reason to hate cell phones and their abusers) which to me indicated she wasn't really interested. Thanks again for the insights.

When the speaker began this statement he should have said, "I'm going to put down the script I've been reading from and start reading from another script." There is no way what I heard was a spontaneous sidebar. The speaker did make one slip-up (saying 3 countries and later 2), but other than that it was as polished as anything I remember from a convention. The whole thing was written, re-written, honed, and focus grouped (I wonder if the society uses focus groups?) beforehand.
I noticed that the script used a weak qualifier near the beginning. The script read, "I would like for you to know how the Governing Body, the Faithful Slave, feels about things right now in this system of things." The verb "feels" in this context is pathetically weak. Why didn't the script say KNOWS or BELIEVES or IS CERTAIN? Using the verb "feels" is ambiguous and leaves an convienent escape for future deniability...which will be needed.
I can't recall who wrote it (sorry), but the point about God sending Jesus into harms way was excellent. Then again JW's aren't that big on Christ in the first place.

according to their site, there is already 29 people within one hundred miles of rochester who have signed up to the site saying they would be interested in a meetup.

Opposing anything requires action. Did JW's print anti-Hitler literature and distribute it? Did JW's participate in any attempts to overthrow or assassinate Hitler? What action did JW's take in their opposition to Hitler? Opposing one thing generally means supporting something else. Hitler was a politician. What German politician did JW's support during Hitler's rule?
Saying "JW's were the only religion to oppose Hitler" is a bit like saying "vegetarians are the only eaters to oppose pork."

Do any other single guys here experience this? I can go for months without meeting one woman of interest. Then suddenly women start coming out of the wood work. After a long dry spell, during the last week I have met three women. All three of them gave me their phone numbers without me asking. All three of them, and this is a benefit of being single at my age that I am coming to appreciate, are educated career women and have what sounds like nice lives. Two of the three have grown children that are out of the house. They range in ages from the mid-30's to late 40's and have been divorced for years.
In the past what I had always done was pick one for the most superficial reasons and focus on seeing where things would go thinking anyone else I had met would be around later. That's really laughable looking back at it. Then I decided that there is nothing wrong with causually dating more then one person if need be just to find out more about them before getting too involved. This works fine until invariably they find out about each other and stop taking phone calls.
So what do you guys do? Take your best guess and toss the other numbers? See more than one at a time and run the risk of being branded a player? Is there a third way? What do the ladies on this board think?
